I've discovered in the recording process that there is always something new to learn, some technique you didn't know was available to you, or some short key that you hadn't used before, it could be a new approach on how to use tools you have used before, but maybe not to their full potential. The list can be long. In my case there were a bunch of things I learned from my friend Karma, who as luck would have it for me, has amazing ears. It was during a listening session of some of the songs on the EP that Karma picked up on something happening with my guitar solo. We played it back and she asked me if I heard what was happening. Honestly I couldn't tell what she was hearing, well not at first anyway. But after she sat down and dove into the session it was pretty obvious what she had pinpointed and after listening again I heard it myself.
There was a timing issue. The guitar solo was not in time with the drums and I can only blame myself really because I more than likely mislaid the live drum track when I was replacing the programmed one. I new there was a bit of time issue because I ended up re-recording my rhythm guitar part, BUT I totally didn't think about redoing or timing out the solo. Karma spotted it instantly and thankfully for me she is a master at editing the timing on songs. She graciously showed me the process and fortunately for me she edited the entire guitar solo putting it back in time with the drums. I could immediately hear the difference and it saved my song from being slightly out of whack to being the tighter version I had always intended it to be.
I can't express my gratitude enough for this and the other aspects of timing and recording knowledge that I learned from Karma that day. It is the kind of knowledge and skillset that will make my future records all the better when I notice an issue.
A huge thank you to Karma, for her gracious gift of time and skill and for our friendship. Even though I began the recording of the EP totally alone, it is taking my community of musicians to bring it home. I am grateful for my circle of friends.
