The Old School

What is The Old School? Is it a Band? Is it a Philosophy? Is it Technology?

In its own way The Old School is all of those things. I have learned over the course of time in forming various bands the joys and frustrations of forming and keeping a solid band line-up intact. It was easier when I was living in Japan and I had connection with a lot of musicians who weren't involved in a lot of different projects. LA was very tricky. While I could maintain a fairly regular line-up for the most part, there was always the shifting in and out due to the various commitments members had to other projects. So I gradually developed a new approach to the idea of “band”. The Old School isn't a constant set of musicians, but rather a fluid movement of not only musicians, but artist and creatives who are involved in a project that is going forth. Collaboration is one of the things I have always loved the most of rehearsing and working with other musicians and expanding that circle is one of the best things about The Old School.

In another sense The Old School is a philosophy. When I hear the phrase “Old School” it conjures up a lot of ideas and imagery. For me it's doing things in a thoughtful way, of being focused not on an end result but on the process, with the flexibility to take in new ideas, to embrace different techniques to achieve the best results. It's like a cold beer with friends after a stretch of collective hard work and the inspiration that can come from that camaraderie. As mention earlier the core of the philosophy would have to be collaboration. My friend Cole unintentionally gave me a little motto which I have woven into The Old School philosophy - “move air”.  I can't remember if I've dropped this in an earlier post, and I hope to give it its own post. But it is very much the approach The Old School takes in terms of recording.

The Old School isn't directly a “technology” but it does embrace technology in explorative ways. And when I say “technology” people will immediately think of computers, apps, and these days AI. But “technology” by definition:

{MWD -2} : a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge

Is more than gigabytes and prompted speech. The Old School approaches projects using the full scope of the definition above.

As we are in the final stretch to releasing the new EP project - “Sound Of Life” - I am excited as we continue to collaborate with graphic artists, photographers and creatives to put the finishing touches necessary before the EP's release.
